Video: LUKE HERSHESON SALON TIPS

March 15th, 2011
Video: LUKE HERSHESON SALON STYLE
It’s that awkward bit of the beauty calender. Not quite winter, but still not spring.
Thinking we should do something about changing the seasons vis-a-vis L’Onglex’s hair was pretty easy once we’d made the choice but ironing out the details was far harder than we could have imagined.
Thinking we would like something classic but punky, and winter meets spring we finally managed to come across this video by celebrity stylist Luke Hersheson which we think is just the ticket for this time of year.
It’s basically Audrey Hepburn meets street style and we like it for the simple reason that it’s a grungy take on a French pleat but stays smart enough to be worn on a night on the town ….

Hair tips from the farmyard ….

Hair tips from the farmyard ….
Although we at L’Onglex like hearing of the strange and unusual when it comes to tips and treatments the latest ‘cult-product’ supposedly doing the rounds has left us feeling a little out of sorts.
I mean, we love to experiment and all that but news that the blogosphere is buzzing with salutations concerning the uber amounts of general hair happiness to be had by applying a product called Mane and Tail shampoo is making us a bit …. giddy.
Supposedly the shampoo of choice for thoroughbreds everywhere, Mane and Tail has now bolted the stable door and has been spotted in the hands of stylists at some very swanky salons in the States.
Quite who it was that decided to give it a go in the first place we are as yet unsure but although we Irish are known for our love of horses, I can’t really see it catching on to quickly with the girls of Co Meath.
Having plastered my hair in Guinness, stuck mashed strawberries on my face and plastered my buttocks with a cream made from placentas I know I’m not exactly best qualified to be critical, but the way we see it, using a horse shampoo is probably taking your love of equine accessories a bit too far – if you have a mane and tail, this ones for you, if you merely have a mane …. we say refrain !!

Trendwatch: lining those locks

Trendwatch: lining those locks
While we would always be reluctant to admit it, where Chanel seem to go most of us at some point or other will invariably follow. Remember fake tattoos ? Chanel did em, remember must have nail polish ? Chanel did it – and so on and so on !
As we are currently prowling runway shows to see what might be the next big thing we must admit that their latest hair trend has left us with a feeling a little out of our depth. In case you’re wondering what this might be, take a look at the picture above and I’ll all be dammed if that aint just a parting made with none other than black eyeliner.
Seems that according to the veritable fashion house blondes will be sporting black and brunettes a streak of yellow. Whilst we wouldn’t exactly be delighted to do it ourselves we are reliably informed that a little strong mousse applied to wet hair will help get you the slicked back look required and all that is left to do after that is make sure the pencil is thick and keep a steady hand for the parting.
As we haven’t actually seen anyone wear this yet we’ll be waiting until it really catches on before we even have a go – either that or we’ll save it for Halloween.
Any thoughts … comments below.

How much is too much when it comes to beauty products?

February 4th, 2011
How much is too much when it comes to beauty products?
When it comes to beauty we at L’Onglex HQ like our splurges just as much as the next girl. Juicy tube lip gloss, chanel mascara and even the odd over priced salon shampoo have been known to wind it’s way into our beauty basket every now and again.
Having vowed to spend less on beauty products and singularly failed to do so, we were feeling slightly down on ourselves until we came across the latest offerings from Phillip P. Thinking our own beauty habits too expensive their latest creation, Russian Amber Imperial Conditioning Creme, is priced at a salary savaging £110 could possibly be the most un-purse-friendly beauty product of the year!
Naturally being the sort of people we are it’s only fair that we explain that the formula is a mix of amino acids and botanicals which according to Phillip promise to restore and nourish as well as infuse hair with thickness and volume.
Personally I’m not sure even if we had the money we would spend it. I mean, for €110 you wouldn’t want better hair, you’d want new hair, with real gold in it, that punctually and politely gets up earlier in the morning and washes and styles itself so its ready for when we wake up.
Thankfully we know our limits and will be saying a big thanks but no thanks to this one, but with a recent survey from Debenhams reporting that the average lady carries around €350 worth of make-up in her beauty bag, we’re sure their must be plenty of people out there who will be splashing out?
What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a beauty buy ….. we’d love to know!

Who wants wavy hair .. we do !
Having been dolled to the nines of late L’Onglex has been contemplating something a little more relaxed by way of styling.
Enter Luke Hersheson with a fabulous video made for ELLEUK (http://www.elleuk.com/) that we think is a perfect for post season hair.
Having watched this and done the twist thing with the curlers we can definitely say we love the effect, but whether we’ll be wearing this with anything other than our Onesies remains to be seen.

Having been dolled to the nines of late L’Onglex has been contemplating something a little more relaxed by way of styling. Something natural, something demure and something we can twist about and put in our mouths.

After some trawling we would like to recommend Luke Hersheson with a fabulous video made for ELLEUK that we think is a perfect for post party season hair.

Video: We love party hair

December 22nd, 2010
Seems like ages since we at L’Onglex posted a video. It isn’t that we don’t like doing it or anything like that but it’s more to do with the fact that we go video crazy for a few days and then we just forget that they’re there.
Anyhows, for the following rather snazzy instructions on an elegant yet simple up-do we are obliged to be thanking the rather brilliant Peter Luxe and the good people at Cosmo Online.
Thinking we were in for a rollercoaster ride of rollers, an ocean of spray and hundreds of discreet clips to get L’Onglex’s hair in ready for party season we were delighted when we came across the rather simple instructions which you can follow by clicking on the image above or the link below.

Our winter hair survival guide

November 22nd, 2010
While summer is generally considered a tough time for our hair nothing compares to the chilly problems winter brings. Dry scalp, dullness, frizz and even breakages are all common problems and as the weather gets damp and temperatures plummet it’s only a matter of time before things go from bad to worse. But fear not L’Onglex readers for we have put together our top tips for surviving four of the most common winter ailments.
Dandruff
When the temperature drops it’s often our scalp that suffers. With the changes in humidity and temperature our oil levels can fluctuate. For some this means  dandruff caused by the oil at the roots of our hair being trapped. Limp locks lacking in lustre is one thing but the dreaded flakes can be quite another. Massaging undiluted coconut oil into the scalp and rinsing with hot water has been known to clear the build up and keep dandruff at bay for up to six months. You can also stop more flakes appearing by massaging the scalp daily to improve circulation.  Applying  a hair mask of baby oil to the scalp before you go to bed and rinsing when you wake is also a great intensive treatment to keep the scalp hydrated during the winter months.
Static
With less moisture in the air even the slightest electrical charge can be picked up from clothes causing your hair to stand on end! Using a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner should make hair less susceptible and applying an anti frizz remedy like John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Creme to the tips of your hair should also make it more manageable for styling.
Dullness
Hair tends to get blown around a bit during the winter months and while most of us will complain of frizz the the real problem is the rough effect it has on our hair. All that damp wet hair and dry heating means more styling which in turn creates follicle friction. As damaged hair means a loss of lustre covering hair will prevent dullness and keep the sheen wear it should be. Cutting down on blow drys, the frequency of hair colouring and intensive styling will also help bring back the natural sheen.
Split ends
Keeping hair hydrated during the Winter months is key if you want to avoid nasty split ends. Hair tends to be at it’s dryest at this time of year which means breakages and split ends are a given. Applying a hydrating rich hair mask like Masquintense Fine by Kerastase once a week during the colder months should keep hair healthy while switching your regular shampoo for one rich in protein like L’oreal’s Serie Nature Shampoo should help protect and strengthen. When it comes to diet filling up on protein rich foods like green veg and nuts will also give hair a boost.

Amy Slimehouse, Cheryl Troll and Christina Aguiscarier are just some of the demented seasonal designs put together by two of London’s hippest salons -Wah nails and BLEACH salon.
They got together to create these celebrity halloween makeovers and now that we’ve seen these we can’t really say that anything less will be good enough for this years L’Onglex’s costume.
Also included in the collection are Death Ditto, Lisa No-Head Lopez and Marilyn Monropey and if you really are serious about replicating the look for your costume we seriously suggest you check out the Lady Carcas look.

L’Onglex loves Veronica Lake … and PIXIWOO !

October 17th, 2010
We cam across this by chance. In fact, it was quite by chance. Having recently watched an old black and white movie starring the very glamorous Veronica Lake L’Onglex did a google search for none other than the above screen temptress.
Not only did we spend hours reading up on our newly discovered film heroine but low and behold we came across the PIXIWOO beauty blog (http://pixiwoo.blogspot.com/) showing us how we could get a bit of vintage Hollywood styling for ourselves.
Basically the video link below shows you all you need to know when it comes to cloning the above look of film noir sophistication with nothing more than some heated rollers and the skillful application of an eyelash curler and not only are we super pleased with the end result but we also rather like the fact that we discovered a fantastic new beauty blog !

Who wants homemade herbal shampoo !

October 11th, 2010
Who wants homemade herbal shampoo !
The how’s and why’s of how L’Onglex got hold of the below recipe for this mondays Mary Make and Do are a little murky.
Some of the recipe we stole, some of the recipe we added to and a good part of the recipe we swore at and  tinkered round with until we got the desired effect. Swearing aside we can now report we are completely satisfied and although in terms of the time we spent and the outlay for ingredients this hasn’t been one of our cheapest recipes we can at least say we have finally got a recipe for a completely natural shampoo !
Most of the ingredients are available from the high street except the liquid soap which can be bought on ebay for next to nothing and if you are really fussy about these things you will be glad to know this suits all hair types.
To make the shampoo you will need ….
4 cups of distilled water
8 teaspoons of tea tree oil
2 teaspoons of vanilla
12 tablespoons of dried rosemary
4 tablespoons of lemongrass
1 cup of liquid soap (available here)
Here’s how it’s done ….
Step 1- Add the rosemary and lemongrass to a large glass mixing bowl. Next, heat the distilled water in a pan until boiling and then add to herbs in the mixing bowl. Cover the bowl with a plate and allow the herbs to seep into the water for 30 minutes.
Step 2 –  Take the cover from the mixing bowl and strain the mix to separate the dried rosemary and the lemongrass from the water. Place the water back into a pan and heat gently for a few minutes but do not allow the water to boil. Mix the in the tea tree oil and vanilla and stir gently for a few minutes.
Step 3- Remove the pan from the heat and add the liquid soap until the mix dissolves completely. As the mixture is oil based it must be mixed well and should be spread around as evenly as possible. Once the mix has cooled completely it can be placed in a plastic container and will be good to go within a couple of hours.
Step 4- Any attempts at this that don’t work can be placed into nice bottles and used to delight your friends and family this Christmas … it’s the thought that counts !
More Mary Make and Do’s coming soon.

Some of the recipe we stole, some of the recipe we added to and a good part of the recipe we swore at and  tinkered around with until we got the desired effect.

Swearing aside, we can now report we are completely satisfied with the formula and although it took ages getting the mix right and we had to buy the ingredients from scratch we can at the very least say we made the damn stuff and it smells nice and it works !

Most of the ingredients are available from the high street except the liquid soap which can be bought on ebay and if you are really fussy about these things you will be glad to know this is completely natural and will be good for nearly all types of hair.

So, to make the shampoo you will need ….

4 cups of distilled water

8 teaspoons of tea tree oil

2 teaspoons of vanilla

12 tablespoons of dried rosemary

4 tablespoons of lemongrass

1 cup of liquid soap

Here’s how it’s done ….

Step 1- Add the rosemary and lemongrass to a large glass mixing bowl. Next, heat the distilled water in a pan until boiling and then add the water to the herbs in the mixing bowl. Cover the bowl with a plate and allow the herbs to seep into the water for half an hour or so.

Step 2 - Take the cover from the mixing bowl and strain the mix to separate the dried rosemary and the lemongrass from the water. Place the water back into a pan and heat gently for a few minutes. Do not allow the water to boil. Mix in the tea tree oil and vanilla and stir gently for a few minutes.

Once the mix has cooled completely it can be placed in a plastic container and should be good to go within a couple of hours.

Step 4- Any attempts at the recipe that don’t work can be poured into nice plastic bottles, tied with a ribbon and used to delight close friends and family this Christmas. Always remember it’s the thought that counts !

More Mary Make and Do’s coming soon.
