Now hands that do dishes really can be soft as soft as your face

March 4th, 2011
Now hands that do dishes really can be soft as soft as your face!
If you’ve ever had the sinking feeling that doing the washing up is something of a drag for your hands news reaches the L’Onglex beauty desk that the folks at Fairy have had something of a Eureka moment.
Yup, after years of telling us that our hands can be as soft as our face they’ve had something of a Eureka moment and henceforth will be producing a version with the skin softening benefits of Olay.
Having surveyed the kitchen sink habits of no less than 3000 of us they discovered that a dish or two here or there can age our hands by as much as 7 whole years and in a response to questioning 51% of those surveyed expressed the opinion that they were conscious of the appearance of our hands.
In the age of equality we’re not sure whether any men took part in the survey ( we are sure they did !! ) but if the figures are true then we predict the new formulas of Aloe & Cucumber, Silk & Orchid, Almond and Peach & Mandarin will be a raging success. Erin O’Connor to be the face of a 50’s themed campaign.
Although washing the dishes doesn’t quite sit well with our absolute devotion to not chipping our nails we do at least like the idea of teaming beauty and household chores. Should the concept prove to be a success we eagerly await the invention of an oven cleaner that doubles as an exfoliator and the Hoover that blow dries our hair !

Bespoke brows for London Fashion Week

February 18th, 2011
Whether you go the salon route or take the bottle approach, matching your collars with your cuffs is always a bit of a tricky one. Lets face it, eyebrows just never come out the same colour and the mismatch that is the end result is always a bit of a giveaway.
Quite why nobody has come up with a solution to this two tone dilemma is really beyond our reckoning but news this week of a London salon who are rolling out a range of brow colours in time for London Fashion Week has had us quite intrigued.
Using a hand painted palette of custom dye which features around fifty shades, the treatment from the people at Blink Bar promises a match to any colour and to  any tone and is so accurate we are also assured it can even be matched to highlights. Since the problem with dyeing your hair and not your eyebrows is the difference in colour, L’Onglex did wonder whether the dye could be used on lashes as well … it can.
Having worked out that we’d really like a go of this to see if it works were probably going to have to wait for a little while until the salons in Ireland get round to making up a batch or two of their own dyes for our colouring pleasure. As much as we love getting our ducks in a row, getting on a Ryanair to London to have our brows dyed does seem to be a treatment too far for the moment.

Pump up the volume – it’s our mascara picks

Pump up the Volume – some of our favourite Mascaras
Don’t really know how this happened exactly but somewhere along the way L’Onglex seemed to fall in love with volumising mascaras. Why exactly this was, how this developed, and when exactly we started making eyes at lash thickening products we can’t tell you. As is always the case for those with an addiction to the slap, one is never satisfied and we knew we wouldn’t be happy til we’d tried everything we could get our greedy hands on.
Having really thought about it, the desire to lash up probably came as a result of our eyes exploding when we tried out those glue on lash thingies at a salon who shall remain nameless. Obviously, being the sort we are, the thought of having luridly long, outrageously luscious lashes was too good not to be true. But once the things were glued on and we’d had to suffer the ignominy of having to crawl back to a salon indifferent to our plight and beg for the things to be unglued from our peepers we became a little more discerning about we stick on our eyes.
Anyhows, before we bore you to sleep with our sob stories we can at least reveal the fruits of our labour. No, we haven’t tried everything out there but we can say hand on heart that we’ve been through enough to now know a good un’ from a bad un’. Here, for your consideration, are a selection of the best volumising mascaras that we’ve managed to find over the last year – read it, and don’t weep !
Lesson 1 – Chanel Inimitable Intense is best for length….
Those of you with a desire for some length, some volume and a certain elegance of application will love this one. As the the uniquely designed mascara wand features bristles which align really well each sweep tends to go on really smoothly. Ok, it’s not the fattest lash you’ll ever flutter but it doesn’t cake or crack and the formula is really thin which helps with building the stuff in layers. As a mascara for daywear this is light enough for lengthening by day and can be beefed up for something a bit less subtle for evening wear. Although they probably won’t thank us for saying this, €28 isn’t particularly purse friendly but as it’s pretty adaptable Inimitable Intense makes our list.
Lesson 2 –  Rimmel’s The Max Volume Flash is best value….
A keratin enriched formula, a larger than life wand and soup-thick lashes in less than two sweeps … it can only be Rimmel Max Volume ! At about €8 a pop this is about the best we’ve worn in this price range. In fact, it was one of the best we wore full stop. Having been on the L’Onglex make-up table for some time a rather nice effect of using this was that over time we found our formerly flimsy fluttering went from bad to better. As the formula for Max Volume contains added collagen our lashes fattened up with prolonged use – can’t say fairer than that !
Lesson 3 – Model Co Fiber Lash is more than a gimmick …
As mentioned in other posts on these pages L’Onglex’s biggest beauty gripe has to be our panda eyes. After this comes the fact that even at best our lashes could only be described as .. well .. ‘barely there’. Being in need of a little substance to go with a raging case of lash envy when we first laid eyes on Model Co Fiber Lash we ended up doing a bit of a double take.
Simply, this is a two part mascara which comes blacker than black and is applied and then layered over with hundreds of teeny tiny lash filaments which add density and volume to the liquid. The end result is bulky, sultry and a complete fake. On the downside it’s €35 but if you really struggle to get something noticeable in the lash department you may as well bit the bullet rather than go through three or four of something else. Despite the fact that it sounds quite complex application isn’t to difficult once you’ve got the hang of it.
Lesson 4 – Maybeline’s The Falsies is anything but ….
Whoever devised the formula for The Falsies deserves to be bestowed some kind of beauty sainthood. No matter how many coats you apply it just builds and the fact is unless your really working the whole starry eyed goth look you probably only need one-and-a-half. Yes, if your lashes are are really short it’s probably not the best but on the hand if there long enough so that you can get them round the spoon shaped brush we think this is perfect. As soon as we’d worked out that you have to let the first coat dry a little to keep things neat we were quickly of the opinion that this is the best mascara we’ve ever had.

Santa CLAWS is coming to town …

December 21st, 2010
Santa CLAWS is coming to town ….
Just three days to go and all at L’Onglex are getting ready for the imminent arrival of the big man in red and his stocking full of goodies.
Aside from a bag mostly brimming with chocolate we are also hoping for another set of the above party falsies from none other than Julien MacDonald.
Thinking that our chances of getting these anywhere near our nails after three  Christmas cocktails were slim to none we must admit that we weren’t too keen when we first saw them.
Having now discovered they stick on in a jiffy we’ve been flashing these around and we have to say we’re quite impressed with the overall effect.
In the unlikely event Santa doesn’t bring you a set you can get them in Debenhams for €8 – available in Plain & Gold, Gold & Black, black Zig-Zag and Grey Stud we think they’re perfect for the party season.

Scratch and sniff nails … we can’t wait !

November 10th, 2010
If there is one thing that L’Onglex loves more than nail polish it’s nail polish with a gimmick attached. Any gimmick will do really and thinking about the subject we’re not exactly fussy when it comes to which gimmicks we’ll spend our hard earned cents on.
That said, the latest nail polish collection from Revlon is something we’ve gotten quite excited about as not only do the above shades come in no less than eight glorious colours but they also have one particularly unique feature …. they’re all scented with their own unique flavour !
Currently going down a storm in the States the new Revlon summer shades come with their own unique scent and whilst we haven’t managed to get ourselves a whiff just yet we are assured that Peach Smoothie, Bubble Gum and Ocean Breeze smell divine.
As these haven’t yet launched in Ireland we were thinking what shades we might like for when they launch on these shores and having given the matter some considerable thought L’Onglex is very much hoping they do a chocolate cake version.
Quite what effect the smell of this will have on our diets is anyones guess but knowing our luck they’ll skip that flavour and bring out a Guinness version just for us – Roll on March 2011 !

We heart new MAC

November 9th, 2010
Question- What happens when you add a load of MAC make-up to the fantastically curvaceous imaginings of one of the the worlds most celebrated design talents ?
Answer – The pictures above !
Yes folks, the above images are the creative fusion between MAC cosmetics and dutch design guru Marcel Wanders and now that we’ve at least managed to get our hands on the new Genisa lippy we can say without any hesitation just how gorgeous the new range is.
Looking a little like an experiment to see what would happen when you let a load of modern architects wearing black clothes and frameless specs hang out with extremely vain model types the new range is everything we thought it would be with a touch of the Devil Wears Prada thrown in for good measure.
Featuring some rather futuristic geodesic powder compacts and a nice line in curvy brushes and lipstick applicators we think the finished articles will cause something of a stampede once they hit counters on December.
So far we’ve only managed to get our hands on a preview of the Genisa lipstick but as this is the most perfectly velvety red you can imagine we figure we’ll be raiding the piggy bank to get hold of the full range.
Quite why we’ve gone so ga-ga for this we cannot quite say but as most of what the veritable Mr Wenders designs ends up as collectors items we very much like the idea that we can justify spending a fortune on these in the hope that they become collectors items. We know this is unlikely, but we have to have some reason for spending €55 on the make-up brush below !

Been on holiday lately..

October 2nd, 2010
Just when we thought that science couldn’t advance our beauty regime any further comes news of the latest invention from the clever boffins at Panasonic. The above image is none other than a new robot that can wash and condition hair in just under three minutes !
Utilising the latest in technology the robot does a three dimensional scan of the head and adjusts the movements of it’s 16 fingers to give a the perfect rinse, shampoo and condition. Having been developed to cater for Japans ever burgeoning population of old folks who are unable to wash their own hair the robot is being rolled out to be sold to the mass market as we speak.
Now, having watched the video of the robot in action we did think what a robot hair salon might actually be like and the main complaint seemed to be that the whole process looked a bit clinical and not very friendly. Although we’re not the sort to judge we had to agree, and then when we looked at it  then we began to think that it might not be a bad thing after all – I mean, consider the following questions ….
Q: Does the robot rinse ?
A: Yes !
Q: Does it shampoo ?
A: Yes !
Q: Does it condition ?
A: Yes !
Q: Does it remember the dimensions of my head ?
A: Yes !
Q: Will it offer me an old edition of Hello magazine when I enter the room ?
A: No !
Q: Whilst turning on the water will the robot scald my head and stare blindly out of the salon window until I complain and then drop the temperature to such a level that I leave the salon with mild hypothermia ?
A: No !
Q: Having listened to me complain about the temperature twice will the robot then shampoo me in a surly fashion which promotes an uncomfortable silence until the robot finally asks me if I’m going on holiday ?
A: No !
Q: Three times ?
A: No !
Q: Having not asked me where I’m not going on holiday will the robot then proceed to tell me where it went on holiday, where it’s Mum went on holiday and the name of the boarding kennels where it’s Mums dog stayed at while it’s Mum was on holiday ?
A: No !
There you have it – robots all the way as far as L’Onglex is concerned ? We’ll be posting the video on our facebook page shortly !

Light therapy for acne ?

September 21st, 2010
Light therapy for acne
With Light Therapy being an established procedure in the treatment of outbreaks, scars and fine lines it was only a matter of time before some bright spark ( excuse the pun ) came up with a version for home use.
Beloved by the likes of Natalie Imbruglia and if the rumours are true Carla Bruni, a Canadian company have developed the Tanda Light Therapy Skincare System which hits shelves in the UK and promises the same results as treatments currently available through dermatologists and facialists.
The hand held devices mimic the light frequencies used in clinic based treatments and at €300 it’s makers claim the Tanda system works out as a much cheaper option than a number of salon appointments.
The light therapy is available with two specific light types, Regenerate, which emits a red light to the dermis to promote collagen production for fine lines and wrinkles and Clear, which uses a blue light to reduce blemishes, bacteria colonies and minimise future outbreaks.
As we’re yet to try either we urge caution but as both Light Therapy models have so far promised good results in independent tests we figure we might keep an eye on it. Apparently the Clear model has seen 100 per cent of testers experiencing a significant reduction in acne lesions and 90 per cent finding that outbreaks were lessened.
If any L’Onglex readers have tried light therapy we’d be interested to know how you got on and whether you thought it was worth the money ?

€28,000 for a bottle of nail polish …. have Volvo gone mad

September 20th, 2010
Mirror, lights, seatbelt …. er nail polish !
Those of you who demand a little more by way of performance from your car will no doubt be delighted to discover the latest accessories available with the new Volvo S60.
Obviously it comes with all the usual details one might expect from a car in it’s class but with one subtle difference …. matching nail polish.
Yup …. if you really are the sort of gal that really likes to accessorise  the new Volvo comes complete with a nail polish to match the colour of your car.
Dreamed up by the marketing people responsible for the launch the three shades are available in striking Ember Black, Vibrant Copper and Cosmic White?
As L’Onglex is still struggling with ways of finding the money for the new Tom Ford Collection we think €28,000 might be slightly out of our price range and even if we did win the lotto we’re still not sure we could justify the money.
Having discussed it this morning we are agreed that we like the accessories concept and hope the idea catches on. As London, Paris or Milan are out for the foreseeable future we doubt we’ll need a Volvo S60 anytime soon but when Dublin Council bring out a polish range to match L’Onglex’s wheelie bins we’ll be the first in line.

In praise of tweezerman

August 26th, 2010

tweezerman_benefit_brow_bar

Regular readers will know we at L’onglex are quite passionate about matters brow related. Having trawled through the lookbooks, tested what’s on the market and generally preened and pranced we can now declare our undying affections for Tweezerman.

Whilst we won’t gush too much on the subject we feel we must also mention we spooted something rather good we thought we ought to share. Our belated but beady beauty eye has noticed that said Tweezerman have teamed up with Benefit Brow Bars to produce some rather fabulous 70’s inspired tweezers.

Teaming cuter than cute designs with the fact that Tweezerman is thus far the only thing that can prevent our brows looking like a  mangy cat we know we were a bit late in finding this but we are delighted we got their eventually.
