L’Onglex loves Veronica Lake … and PIXIWOO !

October 17th, 2010
We cam across this by chance. In fact, it was quite by chance. Having recently watched an old black and white movie starring the very glamorous Veronica Lake L’Onglex did a google search for none other than the above screen temptress.
Not only did we spend hours reading up on our newly discovered film heroine but low and behold we came across the PIXIWOO beauty blog (http://pixiwoo.blogspot.com/) showing us how we could get a bit of vintage Hollywood styling for ourselves.
Basically the video link below shows you all you need to know when it comes to cloning the above look of film noir sophistication with nothing more than some heated rollers and the skillful application of an eyelash curler and not only are we super pleased with the end result but we also rather like the fact that we discovered a fantastic new beauty blog !

We love pastels

August 11th, 2010
We love pastels
For those of us wrestling with the idea of bronzing skin for the remaining days of summer sun L’Onglex would advise caution. Not because we think it’s suddenly a bad look or anything like that but for the simple reason we came across this lookbook for pastels by the ever brilliant Lisa Eldridge.
If you just so happen to be a bit bored of current glam make-up trends we think this might be the perfect time to go pastel. On a side note, the final result looks a bit odd and we weren’t too sure but when some bright spark in these parts pointed out that it might be because the model is on a white background we all went ahhh in unison and rushed to the blog forthwith. As evening looks go we think this is a killer …. pastel shades await !

L’Onglex goes all twilight

Having discussed this for a while we are not quite so sure what it is about her that has taken our fancy but we like the whole moody thing she’s slowly cultivated and having her currently stare down to us from every billboard and the back of the bus we we’re thinking of cultivating our very own moody theme.

Electric blue eyes by Lisa Eldridge

July 7th, 2010
We at L’Onglex love trying out new looks but sometimes they can go wrong….terribly, terribly wrong !
Luckily thanks to the wonders in make-up technology enlisting the help of someone who knows more than we ever will is as easy as googling Lisa Eldridge.
Yup, our favourite celebrity stylist has come up trumps with some tips for popping those blue peepers and since we’re so incredibly shaky when it comes to shadows it’s best for all concerned if we let Lisa take the centre stage.

L’Onglex loves Ahava mineral foundation

June 25th, 2010
Regular readers will know when it comes to natural make-up we at L’Onglex are borderline fanatical, We just can’t get enough of the stuff so when we heard about the minerial make-up from Ahava to say we we’re excited probably doesn’t do it justice.
When we did get our hands on the dinky green compact we happened to find out that the mineral foundation really, really is quite natural. In fact Dead Sea Minerals, a dash of seaweed and some soft focus pigments had us nodding along in a sort of studiously warm glow.
Anyhow, we’ve been trying the powder out this week and as well as being quite light it builds up really nicely and frankly we’re really quite impressed. Another reason for being quite taken with the stuff is that it just so happens that mineral make-ups are better for the skin and allegedly it’s even OK to sleep in the stuff.
At the moment the compact is only available online at Ahava.com but once word gets out we’ve a sneaking suspicion that every beauty counter from here to timbuktu will be signing up for some !

Regular readers will know when it comes to natural make-up we at L’Onglex are borderline fanatical. Frankly, we just can’t get enough of the stuff and when we heard about the minerial make-up from Ahava to say we we’re excited probably doesn’t do it justice.

When we did get our hands on some of the products including the dinky green compact above we happened to find out that the mineral foundation really, really is quite naturally good. In fact looking at the pack to discover it contains goodies like Dead Sea Minerals, seaweed and some soft focus pigments we we’re nodding along in a sort of studiously warm, naturally beautiful manner.

Off on holiday – get sensational slide free summer slap!

June 24th, 2010
Off on holiday – get sensational slide free summer slap !
Since we at L’Onglex spend all our euros and cents on make-up and nail polish heading off on a holiday is currently beyond our meagre means. Yup, this summer we probably won’t be heading off anywhere more exotic than Bray and for our summer spa break we’ve had to make do with adding an ‘r’ to Spa and have chosen a treatment involving a Dairy Milk and a bag of Tayto’s. Frankly, it’s all we in these parts can afford.
Still, being the considerate people we are at L’Onglex Towers we appreciate that some of you will be heading off to slightly more exotic places and that you might be looking for a few pointers on how not to have your make up slide off all over the place as soon as the temperature hits 30 degrees.
Here are our six top tips for sensational slide free summer slap !
Keep things simple
It is a common misconception that going on holiday looks all fresh and natural and will have you looking all model and like and radiant. As well as the perils of the sun on fair Irish skin there’s also the clogging, glooping and messiness that holiday make-up causes. For daytime wear keep it as light as possible and, in the interests of keeping those ope pores as clear as you can, ditch  foundation completely.
If, like us, going natural doesn’t leave you too comfy ditching powders for liquid foundations will make a big difference. Anything with a good SPF should do it and remember to trial a few before you head off as nothing ruins a holiday photo  more than a break-out.
Plenty of liquids
As a rule liquid products perform much better in the heat than powders so anything that can be changed should be changed. For eyes and lids don’t forget to prime and cream based shadows for eyes will help. As well as less sliding, you’ll also get a more dewy, natural finish as liquids tend to give a more matte application.
Lose the gloss
On the subject of lips gloss, and sun are possibly the worst combination. Sticky, icky, gooey and almost guaranteed to ruin a poolside Daquari for day wear switch to tinted lip balms with built in SPF. What’s true of the gloss is also true of lipstick so again avoid for all but the coolest of days.
Seek out cool dark places
When it comes to applying for the evening make sure skin is cool and as dry as possible before application. A cool room is key and give yourself plenty of time for skin to dry out of the shower. Avoiding problematic break outs and clogged pores is paramount so a good cleanser used well before application works wonders. The key to applying in the heat is to give everything a bit more time than you normally might. Leave more time for liquids to sink in and settle and if you’re going from powder to liquid patience is even more important.
Get colour clever
Even the most carefully applied make-up is going to run a little when the weather warms. Using neutral, natural colours and avoiding colour which will show if make-up bleeds a bit will leave you looking more the picture of refined sophistication you undoubtedly are as opposed to looking like a left handed Jackson Pollock did your make-up using nothing more than a cement mixer and an omelette pan.
Bring some blot
If there is a golden rule of holiday make-up we’ve no idea what it is. Frankly, it will run, it will clog … so bring take a bit of Pressed Blot Powder by MAC’s as evening top-ups are always a bit troublesome.

The high maintenance guide to festivals

June 22nd, 2010
The high maintenance guide to festivals
There isn’t really I nice way of putting this so we’ll come right out and say it ….
We at L’Onglex are a bit shallow.
We’ll also add to that a certain amount of vanity and a bit of a weird obsession with having things ‘quite pretty’ and ‘just so’.
Now, this isn’t really a problem in our day to day lives but obviously the current buzz of excitement arounf these parts at the arrival of festival season brings us out in a nervous rash at the thought of sharing portable showers and having to have to pee in fields of fellow revelers.
I mean, it’s OK roughing it with the wet wipes and slumming it with the dry shampoo, and when we think about it, we do look quite good in Hunter Wellingtons and woolen ponchos but being as we are the high maintenance sort we just cant bring ourselves to go with the idea of letting it all hang out on the beauty front.
With this in mind we’ve produced the following tips for high maintenance festival folk like us !
Step 1 – The Eyelash Tint
Mascara, mud, sweat and drunken tears are generally a bad combination. Rain, wind and if you’re lucky scorching heat can play havoc with the black stuff and before you even get near the main stage you’ll be looking like an extra from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
If falling asleep in your make-up and smearing your blow-up pillow don’t sound like the sort of beauty regime you’d be looking to endorse might we suggest a quick tint. Frankly, thirty minutes in the salon will save you battling with the wand from the confines of a damp tent.
Step 2 – Wax it
Those of you planning to sit yourselves on the shoulders of a certain muscular someone will almost certainly look toward getting a quick wax before you head anywhere near the main stage. Yup, sitting on someones shoulders waving those arms about might be a sure fire way to get yourself on telly …. but showing those grey patches to a worldwide audience will have you remembered for all the wrong reasons. Trust us, if you’ve ever seen the footage from Woodstock you’ll know it makes sense.
Step 3 – The Twelve Week Blow Dry
Perma-hair has moved on from the days of the beehive and Nancy Reagan which is great news for festival vanity. The twelve week blow dry means not only that you’re hair will look great for anything up to … well … twelve weeks, but that you won’t have to fork out €30 for 15 minutes of pampering in the GHD tent. The protein rich treatment will have your locks smooth and shiny all weekend and as long as you get it done a couple of weeks before you pack your rucksack you will have plenty of time to give the treatment time to settle.
Step 4 – Fake Tan
If your not too keen on messing around with tinted moisturiser and a hand mirror, a light spray tan should give you a lovely golden glow and should also leave you with the added benefit of being able to ditch the foundation. A word of warning here though ladies, make sure the brand of fake tan from your chosen salon is one wish is washable with shower gel as opposed to water only – getting rid of that streaky look aided only by the cold water of a rancid festival shower is not a pleasant experience.
Step 5 – The Hotel
Nothing ruins ones beauty more than a bad nights sleep. Frankly, if camping were so good no would bother building hotels would they ? Yes we know it’s a bit of a cheat but a night between starched cotton sheets in a room with monogrammed pillows beats even the best blow-up mattress. Add to that the small fact that on any festival campsite the odds of the person in the tent next to you not being a student learning to play Wonderwall on an acoustic guitar are extremely slim. Get a taxi. Get a room !

Summer make-up essential!

June 18th, 2010
Might be just me but anymore than two hours in the holiday sun and my make-up starts to look like it was painted on by Edvard Munch.
Quite why it chooses to slide down my face is a bit beyond me and rather than applying everything two inches above where it should be and waiting for it to slide down so that at some point my holiday face might actually match my own I have been casting around for something that might make the whole affair look a bit less gloopy.
Enter what we think might offer something of a solution by way of Mac’s new Blot Powder. Designed by those clever make-up boffins ( we love boffins !) the powder is designed to help with shine control and slippage without any adding anything by way of colour or texture.
Obviously, we don’t want to bang on too much about something that is yet to get the full L’Onglex seal of approval but as the powder contains Mica and Sillica to absorb excess oils we think it might just be going into our holiday suitcase. Whether it helps reduce clogging and break outs we don’t yet know !
