We’re lovin Sally Hanson’s cuticle repair cream

April 22nd, 2010
As some of you will have no doubt realised by now we at L’Onglex are quite keen on all things nail related. We see it as a solemn duty to bring you not only the best nail polish remover, but also a bit of help from time to time if your paws need patching up a bit.
So in the event you need a bit of repair on the cuticle front we’ve been taking a peek at the Sally Hanson Diamond cuticle repair cream. Designed to stop cuticles drying and cracking and is full of skin conditioning goodies and being devotees of all things nail related we could blind you with talk of proteins and vitamins until the cows come home but there’s no need because, like everything Sally Hanson, it works a charm. Sinks in quite quickly, soothes and nourishes, not to oily and it puts a stop to those sharp cuticle pains you get when you know its time for a bit of TLC.
However, before you go running off to Boots to fill up the beauty box there is a slight downside and we also feel it our solemn duty to warn you in advance – it smells delicious. In fact, it smells too delicious. Think of the most scrummy vanilla and coconut ice cream you ever tasted and frankly you won’t even be close.
If you, like me, you have certain willpower issues when it comes to passing by the Ben and Jerry’s in Tesco or are the sort of person who is can hear the faint jingle-jangle of ice-cream vans from forty miles away – Sally Hanson cuticle creme will break you. If you like ice-cream, steer well clear.

Make your own…..nail strengthener!

April 7th, 2010
If you change your nail polish as often as I do you will of course notice that all that on and off and on and off takes it’s toll on the nails. For most people, it’s not really a problem but if your nails are a bit brittle to begin with it won’t be long before the splits appear. Obviously it goes without saying that we at L’Onglex have developed a formula for nails that is as much about repair as it is about being a good nail polish remover but if your using too frequently a bit of rest and repair should see your nails back to health in no time.
If you need something a little more intensive than our own formula we suggest you have a go at making a nail repair recipe which should help to bind brittle nails and strengthen if a bit brittle. Simply mix a teaspoon of wheat germ, twi teaspoons of castor oil and a teaspoon of salt into a bowl and mix together. Keep the mix in a storage bottle and dab the mixture onto your nails from time to time for ten minutes before wiping off with some tissue paper.
As well as the oil which should moisturize and hydrate your nails, the key ingredient is wheatgerm which being packed with vitamin E and a raft of B vitamins is also full of minerals like zinc and potassium which will work wonders for restoring and repairing nails which have been stripped of their natural goodness. Twice a month or more should do it.

If you change your nail polish as often as we do you you’ll be nodding in agreement when we say a good nail strengthener is paramount to any polish junkies weekly routine.

Now we at l’onglex towers are nothing if not resourceful so it is with great excitement that we bring you our latest nail care related discovery – a recipe for homemade nail strengthener which turns out is really simple to make!

Simply mix a teaspoon of wheat germ, two teaspoons of castor oil and a teaspoon of salt into a bowl and mix together. Keep the mix in a storage bottle and dab the mixture onto your nails from time to time for ten minutes before wiping off with some tissue paper.

How to….DIY pedicures!

March 25th, 2010
With Spring here and summer quickly upon us our L’Onglex thoughts have turned to toes. Gladiator sandals, strapless sling-backs, peep toe mules and humble flip flops are once again ready to grace our wardrobes and so of course it’s time for a peddy !
Now the good news is you don’t have to go all the way to the salon for a pedicure ….. you can do your own from home if you follow a few simple steps to getting a professional finish. Here’s are a few pointers we’ve put together.
Remove -
Get the old colour off with some L’Onglex polish remover and a cotton ball. Once our lovely soothing formula has cleaned away your old polish you can tidy those edges with cotton buds for those difficult spots.
Soak -
10 – 15 minutes should do it – anymore and your feet will look like summer fruit. Add a few drops of tea tree oil ( great for preventing athletes foot ), some Epsom salt and a bit of scented oil to the mix to get the perfect foot formula. Remember not to make the water too hot as this will tighten the skin and make pumicing more difficult !
Pumice -
Once you’ve dried your oh-so-soft feet in your fluffiest towel its time to exfoliate. You can rub in any direction but don’t scrub too hard. Problem areas like hard skin on the side of your feet can be worked a bit more vigorously. If you suffer from dry or cracked heels try a formula rich in Coconut Oil which will help stop the drying out that tends to cause heels to crack.
Dead skin be gone -
Exfoliation is a must with any decent pedicure so just because your doing the home version doesn’t mean you skimp on the details. Remove dry skin from the legs and tops of your feet with a scrub or cream. You don’t have to use anything too expensive here as the skin around your legs and feet won’t need the same treatment as you would use for your face and neck. Try Body Shop body exfoliator or make your own mix with salt and olive oil – rinse with clean warm water and pad dry.
Time to trim -
Nothing too short at this point. Square toes look a bit more modern than rounded nails but getting the length right makes the real difference. If you rub backwards from the bottom of the toe you should just be able to feel the edge of the nail.
Softening the cuticles is a must. Try a cuticle stick and push the cuticles inwards to get the shape you need. Remember not too push them back too far. If you get a pain your applying too much pressure and since the cuticle is their to protect your nails from infection going too far can lead to cracked cuticles in the longer term. Never cut away at your cuticles and use a cuticle repair oil such as Sally Hansen’s or try solar oil which works wonders – easy does it !
Hydrate -
Massage your feet with your favourite cream. It’ll keep you soft, supple and make those summer feet less prone to drying out. Try vitamin ‘E’ night cream which works wonders for repair and moisture. Remember to alternate the shoes, the nicest manicure in the world won’t do you any good if you’ve got tan lines from wearing gladiator sandals.
Time to paint -
Always use a clear base coat. We know this takes longer to do but then since your going to all the trouble you might as well do the job properly. A good base coat will help the polish look better for longer and means you wont get stains on your nails if your using darker colours.
Once the base coat is applied go for two thin coats and store your polish in the fridge beforehand. In the summer months if the polish is too warm the colours can separate and become streaky. Before you apply the polish, tip the bottle upside down a couple of times but don’t shake.
Once your completely dry and have resisted the temptation to smudge your new toes add a topcoat  - we love Sally Hansen Instadry ….. 15 seconds and your done.

Are nails the new shoes ?

March 20th, 2010

Picture-13

Remember shoe lust … Blahniks, Louboutins, Carrie Bradshaw and Jimmy Choo’s ? It seems like ages since we had the money for it !

Looking back, blowing the bank on statement fashion seems to belong to a bygone age. Our credit was more flexible, our shoe lust knew no bounds, we were brash, bold and debt wasn’t a problem – these days subtle is the new catwalk statement and serious fashionistas are swooning over the return of the nail.

Nail trends have fast become a look on every catwalk and are quickly working their way into the high street with this seasons ‘must have’ being Chanel Particuliere. If you can get your hands on a bottle ( seriously difficult ) you’ll be amazed by the amount of ‘Is that Chanel Particuliere ?’ comments you’ll get from strangers at everywhere from BT’s to Tesco – and the best bit is that good nails don’t cost a fortune, just a little time.

If your looking to buff up those pinkies here are a few simple tips on getting the best from your nails ;

Eat … dammit !

Your nails are like your hair in that they reflect your diet. Foods like spinach, yogurt, garlic, eggs and oily fish are great for you and your nails.

If you need a real nail boost try almonds. Five or six daily will get some seriously good nail results. Splitting, chipped or brittle nails can be strengthened with Vitamin ‘E’ cream and Aloe Vera. Look for a tube with a high concentration and add a touch to your nails and cuticles and leave overnight.

Pamper

If you tend to get dry nails or splits when you remove your polish try products with added Aloe Vera and Pro Vitamin B5 ( like L’Onglex !) which will help splits and soothe your nails when you remove polish.

File …

When your filing nails always work in a circular motion to avoid opening up the tips of the nails. Too much filing and you’ll damage the ends causing them to split and swell – always take it easy and let your nails recover.

Be cute (ical)

One of the main problem areas for nails is dry and cracked cuticles. Invest a little in cuticle oil or cuticle repair cream and you’ll see the difference quickly.

If you change polish regularly or wear gel nails try the L’Onglex acetone free version which is a softer formula designed for delicate nails. Same great results but with a milder formula.

Argon Oil …. no longer made from goats poo !

March 5th, 2010
Argon Oil
In an industry awash with miracle cures it’s nice to find the odd bit of news here and there that doesn’t exactly claim to be a miracle. Argon Oil is fast gaining a reputation with skin-care insiders for being, if not quite a miracle, at least pretty special. The oil has been used in skin and hair-care for centuries by the Berber tribes of southern Morocco, and is still harvested today in fair-trade collectives which act as a support network and valuable source of income for the peoples native to the desert in which the tree grows.
Fair-trade aside, Argon Oil is completely organic and contains a healthy dose of Vitamin ‘E’ ( just like our beloved nail polish remover ) and essential fatty acids which make it the perfect perfect-me-up for skin repairs and anti-aging. If your wondering how it works, the Vitamin ‘E’ element in the Argon Oil will help protect carotenoids within the skin and assuming your getting your five-a-day and plenty of water, will prevent the build up of free radicals and other such nasties which damage skin, and also help speed up the way your skin rejuvenates with younger cells.
We’ve been trying out the pure organic version from Naturelle d’Agan and it’s quite neat for making repairs to my hands and hair. Particularly as an overnight repair for split ends. Lastly, and this is probably the best bit, Argon Oil is no longer harvested from nuts found in goats poo, which, however dedicated you are to having beautiful skin, isn’t going to give you much of a swoon factor next time your in the beauty aisles at Brown Thomas.

Banish blemishes

If your days consist of being pampered in the fashion of Marie Antoinette you won’t need to read this, but if your hands are a bit like mine you’ll understand the problem. It’s all very well investing your hard earned cents in the getting the glam factor but what about the finer points. A quick look down at my hands as I type and it occurs to me I might need to get rid of some of those unsightly red blotches and finer scars. The answer, apparently, is Vitamin E – one of natures best healing agents.
If you didn’t know this, and I didn’t, Vitamin E helps repair everything from damaged skin around the lips to acne scaring and burns and the best thing is you probably don’t need to spend tons of money on super advanced cosmic formulas to get the vitamins you need. Anything with a decent IU concentration will see your blemishes banished in no time.
No matter what your beauty budget I’m pretty sure most piggy banks won’t make a squeely noise with Kelkin Viatmin ‘E’ enriched creme. Available from Boots you can get some for a quite reasonably priced €6.75 and 2000IU per 100g it’s about the highest concentration they do.
There’s also the nourishing night-creme from the Body Shop which is perfect for those overnight repairs – dab a bit on your nails and cuticles in before you go to bed. If you’ve just divorced a Russian oligarch and have a bit of spare change to throw around take a peek at Lancome night recovery at €120.
Of course, I suppose, and this is a radical idea, that you could always get the vitamins  through food. But on the other hand popping along to your local deli and asking if there’s  anything on the menu that might be good for repairing stretchmarks might get you some very strange looks indeed – some things are best kept in a bottle !

Jade green with envy….

February 24th, 2010

nails_inc_colours

We’ve been going gaga for pastels here at Longlex HQ so I was only delighted to get my hands on a couple of polishes from the Nails Inc Spring/Summer collection. There are four shades in the collection, Birdcadge walk- a cloudy pink, Devonshire Row – a light purple, Spring mews – a creamy jade green and Chalkfarm – a cornflour blue.
This morning given the rain, wind and general lack of sunshine I decided to road test Spring Mews and I’m pleased to say that the creamy jade polish lifted my outfit as well as my mood.
I’m always a little sceptical of pastel polishes in terms of depth of colour but one coat of spring mews over a base coat of Sally Hanson’s Miracle cure followed by a top coat of Sally Hanson’s Insta Dry left me with a rich creamy colour that collected it’s fair share of compliments.
Teemed with my usual black pencil skirt and white shirt combo the polish really stood out and made me feel (dare I say it) devilishly in season!
Check out the swatches above.

YouTube star says L’Onglex so fast!

February 17th, 2010

We were really excited that Amy Dillon of YouTube fame reviewed L’Onglex in her latest video.

In the clip (at 02:06) Amy tells us that her Nannie always bought L’Onglex! She is the third generation in her family to be involved in the beauty business, so we wondered would Amy follow the family tradition? Well we need not have worried, because she gave a resounding thumbs up saying:

With the one I always buy I find I have to soak my fingers for ages especially when wearing a dark colour. Its so annoying and I use a whole bottle in under a month. I really like L’Onglex because it takes the polish off quickly rather than having to leave on soaking.

We have been watching Amy Dillon’s dazzledust25 YouTube channel since she started in early 2009 and have seen it grow to an amazing 13,000 subscribers, with 700,000 total views. Little wonder she was recently described by GirlsTalkBack as an Irish YouTube sensation. Everyone loves her reviews, hauls and tutorials on all things pretty. She recently set up her own website at www.makeupandbeauty.ie which is well worth a visit.

The Beaut.ie Buzz

February 15th, 2010

Screen shot 2010-02-14 at 20.06.27

We’re big believer in blogs and social media here at L’Onglex, so we were over the moon when the gals from Beaut.ie, Ireland’s most popular and influential beauty blog, posted a review of L’Onglex and the appropriately named Aphrodite gave us – literally – the thumbs up:

It’s an oily formula that promises to nourish nails – and it actually does it. Takes off varnish easily with no rubbing and scrubbing – and no nasty splitting apres remover. Thumbs up (French manicured ones of course).

It’s a wonderful endorsement from one of Ireland’s leading beauty experts, and we are delighted. But if that made us happy, the comments practically had us dancing around the office. The Beaut.ie ladies had kindly shared their L’Onglex bounty with some of their loyal readers, and all credit to these women: they really put L’Onglex to the test, piling on dark undercoats, using multiple colours on “sticky sandwich” manicures, and loading on those fab but impossible to remove glitter top coats.

And the feedback from these home testers was indeed glittery – we were, in a word, floored by the love for L’Onglex.

From Emz:

In the true spirit of testing, I used both the Acetone Free & the Complete Care this weekend, one formula for each hand! I too usually use acetone-free removers as my nails crack & split constantly. While usually I find it takes more of the acetone-free products to remove the varnish, I found both of these equally good – one clean sweep & my sticky sandwich was no more!

From Jenni:

In preparation for this I did a nice sticky sandwich mani with OPI’s My Private Jet, which is a kind of shimmery brown with a blue shimmer off it (nice and dark for testing purposes) and when I went to use this, the polish just came off in one sweep of the cotton pad – no staining, no awkward bits caught in the corner, I was really surprised!

From ilovetoshop:

What I loved about them was my nail varnish came away with zero mess-and I mean zero… One dip into the L’Onglex Nail Polish Remover and a glide over my nails and hey presto clean as a whistle… I left my nails polish free for two days (oh the shame!) just to keep an eye on dryness/splitting but I’m delighted to report I got none of these. This is def a hero product for me, very impressive and I would def recommend.

From comments about the packaging (”very 1950’s French style with a gorgeous retro font”) to raves about the scent (”best smelling remover I’ve tried”) it just went on and on.

As Kirstie from Beaut.ie said herself, “My gawd, don’t think I have ever seen such a set of more positive comments in my life!” We’re genuinely delighted and we’d like to offer a huge thank you to the willing army of Beaut.ie two-handed testers – thanks gals, we’re so glad you loved L’Onglex!
